About Joyce Leonard

Founder and Reiki Teacher/Practitioner of Santa Cruz Reiki Works

Joyce began her adult life working in the corporate world, holding positions of customer service representative, call center manager, instructor, product and project manager, and team lead for more than 20 years.

In her late 30s, she felt a different stirring inside her and, after much soul-searching, she changed both life partners and careers and became a Business, Life, and Relationship Coach. She now helps people discover within themselves how to lead richer, happier, more fulfilling lives.

In 2005 she began to study animal Reiki under Kathleen Prasad, of Animal Reiki Source. In 2007 she began my Master’s training with Frans Stiene, of the International House of Reiki. Both Kathleen and Frans continue to be my Reiki teachers and mentors today.

She practices the traditional Japanese form of Reiki called Usui Reiki Ryoho. This form has its roots in Japan and is not the same form as is often practiced in the West. With Usui Reiki Ryoho, the focus is on personal and spiritual development, in addition to hands-on-healing.

Joyce and her husband to the Santa Cruz mountains in the summer of 2008, where I started Santa Cruz Reiki Works. In her Reiki Center, she teaches Reiki, runs Reiki practice groups, classes, and retreats, and offer Reiki treatments. She also teaches Reiki at the University of California Santa Cruz for their Holistic Health Department. She enjoys my volunteer work with Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter and Hospice of Santa Cruz County, where she also teaches and provides treatments to patients and staff.

Joyce writes: “Reiki has greatly improved the quality of my life! I am much more grounded, calm, and compassionate now that I practice Reiki on a daily basis. I experience less anger, less worry, and less fear…which is a wonderful thing! Teaching adults has always been a passion of mine, and I thoroughly enjoy teaching others the power of the system of Reiki and Reiki meditations.”

SATURDAY SEPT. 8, 10 AM: QUEEN LILI’UOKALANI BIRTHDAY FESTIVAL

Please join me and my flutist, Kathy Dorn, next Saturday, September 8 at 10 am in Lili’uokalani Gardens in downtown Hilo. Kathy and I will be opening the He Hali`a Aloha No Lili`uokalani festival, playing original tunes composed by the last monarch of Hawaii, Queen Lili’uokalani. I will also be playing during the Ho’okipa ceremony, where Hawaiian dignitaries will offer gifts in honor of the Queen.

The annual festival is held on the occasion of the Queen’s birthday and is a free family fun event all day long. Featuring children’s activities, entertainment, craft and demonstration booths, food trucks, tea ceremony, and mass hula. (I once danced in this festival about 10 years ago. Now I feel incredibly blessed to perform the Queen’s music.)

“Green Harp” Tutorial Part 1: Section A, Left Hand

I have always loved jazz. I grew up in Greeley, Colorado, where there has been a jazz festival in the spring for decades. I used to sneak of school to sit in the cool dark of the auditorium and listen to band after band for hours and hours.

When I came to the harp in my 40s, I heard that it was possible to play jazz. Most folks felt that a pedal harp was required, but as that was not an option at that time, I was thrilled when Ricky Rasura introduced me to “Green Harp,” an adaptation of the famous jazz tune, “Green Dolphin Street.” This tune was created by Megan Metheney, and is available for free on her website.

I originally created this video for a friend who was coming to visit me from England. She plays music by ear, and I wanted to play with her. Now, I’m sharing this video with you.

Learn the left hand of Section A of “Green Harp” – a sweet jazzy tune for lever harp or pedal harp by Megan Metheny. I’ll teach you the Right Hand in the next lesson.

Megan says, “Enjoy using this music as you like!” Thanks, Megan!
