Thank you for a Great Year! Refer a Friend and Help Fill My Studio…

I want to thank you for all your support over the past year. Leaving Hawaii was a difficult decision because it meant leaving many of my students, and building my new studio in Colorado.

Now, 12 months later (I know! It went fast!), my studio is thriving and about half full.

That means that if each of you referred just one other student to me, my studio would be completely full. I am looking for two specific types of students:

  • Kids who are begging their parents for music lessons – I teach harp, piano and voice.
  • Adults who always wanted to get back to their music. They played an instrument or sang when they were younger, and want to bring music making back into their lives. Lots of my adult students want to learn to read music better and to improvise.

As you may know:

  • I was named a Master Teacher by The Music Place, music school in San Jose, where I still teach.
  • I trained as a healing harpist with the International Harp Therapy Program, and continue to study composition and jazz with some of the top jazz harpists around the globe.
  • I am a Level III practitioner of Somatic Voicework™ The LoVetri Method. This is an elite training for dedicated vocalists of all ages and skills.
  • I teach Royal Conservatory piano, as well as improv, lead sheet reading and left hand pattern creations.
  • I teach music writing and composition. I highly encourage all of my students to write.
  • I learned online myself, 13 years ago, and have been teaching online for 4+ years. Online lessons get free recordings of the lessons.

I am a life-long learner, and life-long lover of music, and feel passionate about bringing out the music in everyone.

Here’s what to do if you want to refer a student to me:

  • If you are a Rosalani Music family, please send your friends to my website, www.RosalaniMusic.net. Or have them write me to schedule a trial lesson. The first lesson is always free.
  • If you are a Music Place family, please send your friends to the Main Office, and Lisa or Liz will help them get set up.

I so enjoy teaching you and your children. If you are able, please help me grow my online/Denver studio, so that I can keep making the world more musical.

Thank you/Mahalo,

Cymber/ Ms. Cymber

A Long Harp Conversation with Ben Creighton Griffiths

Recently, I had the pleasure of sitting down for a long conversation about jazz harp and life with Ben Creighton Griffiths of Cardiff, Wales.

We talk about how he got started playing the harp, and what led him to jazz. We talk about types of jazz that work easily on the harp and types that are nearly impossible.

Ben shares his current projects including:

  • Chube – Ben’s electro fusion trio
  • Transatlantic Hot Club – 1930s French swing and gypsy jazz outfit led by Ben and Adrien Chevalier.
  • Ben’s own solo material – a mix of jazz standards from across the different subgenres

I asked Ben for advice for beginning harpists, and how to get started. And we talk about several pathways for experienced harpists who want to get into jazz.

Pull up a chair and a favorite beverage. You’re in for a treat.

My Studio is a Safe Musical Space

I thought these days were over, really behind us. I find it troubling and sad, and most of all annoying. You see, when I see someone, I see the musician first. And when I hosted my first ever online recital, I was pleased to see that as a group, we had nearly every skin color represented – from the more northern strawberry blond and nearly translucent skin to the equatorial espresso skin designed for lots of sun.

I have no doubt that I have been ingrained with biases, and I’m always seeking them in myself, rooting them out, and learning as I go. Toward that end, I want to make crystal clear that my studio is a safe place to express who you are, in a wide variety of ways. If you want to explore your musical heritage, cool! If you want to sing the latest pop tune, cool!

Lastly, I want to give particular honor to Black Musical Culture. All jazz comes from black music. All rock, gospel, hip-hop, and so on – all of them originated in Black culture. So much music we enjoy today can be traced directly back to Black culture. We need to honor them and share their stories. They are the founders of a lot of American music.

Here’s one of my favorites…Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Legend is that she taught Elvis Presley to play guitar. In any case, she’s one of the early ones, and still breathtaking.
