About Joyce Leonard

Founder and Reiki Teacher/Practitioner of Santa Cruz Reiki Works

Joyce began her adult life working in the corporate world, holding positions of customer service representative, call center manager, instructor, product and project manager, and team lead for more than 20 years.

In her late 30s, she felt a different stirring inside her and, after much soul-searching, she changed both life partners and careers and became a Business, Life, and Relationship Coach. She now helps people discover within themselves how to lead richer, happier, more fulfilling lives.

In 2005 she began to study animal Reiki under Kathleen Prasad, of Animal Reiki Source. In 2007 she began my Master’s training with Frans Stiene, of the International House of Reiki. Both Kathleen and Frans continue to be my Reiki teachers and mentors today.

She practices the traditional Japanese form of Reiki called Usui Reiki Ryoho. This form has its roots in Japan and is not the same form as is often practiced in the West. With Usui Reiki Ryoho, the focus is on personal and spiritual development, in addition to hands-on-healing.

Joyce and her husband to the Santa Cruz mountains in the summer of 2008, where I started Santa Cruz Reiki Works. In her Reiki Center, she teaches Reiki, runs Reiki practice groups, classes, and retreats, and offer Reiki treatments. She also teaches Reiki at the University of California Santa Cruz for their Holistic Health Department. She enjoys my volunteer work with Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter and Hospice of Santa Cruz County, where she also teaches and provides treatments to patients and staff.

Joyce writes: “Reiki has greatly improved the quality of my life! I am much more grounded, calm, and compassionate now that I practice Reiki on a daily basis. I experience less anger, less worry, and less fear…which is a wonderful thing! Teaching adults has always been a passion of mine, and I thoroughly enjoy teaching others the power of the system of Reiki and Reiki meditations.”

Harp Meditation: “Writing Letters Home”

I frequently feel homesick for the stars, for that place that seems always to be slightly out of reach. That’s when “Writing Letters Home” can be a soothing, grounding experience.

I felt most close to it one morning when we were vacationing on the west end of Molokai Island, Hawai’i. I had the honor of watching this gorgeous moonset.

Later, I composed and recorded the music for this meditation. I played it on a Paraguayan Harp, recorded at my home with simple equipment.

Seasons of the Soul – Autumn

ABOUT “SEASONS OF THE SOUL”

Seasons of the Soul is a five-part solo harp meditation, based on Five Elements Chinese Medicine. Each section addresses a specific season, which corresponds to specific organ systems in the body.

In addition, as a Reiki practitioner, I activated the flow of Reiki into my hands as I played these pieces. The end result is a 50-minute, repeatable Reiki session.

You can enjoy “Seasons of the Soul” alone or with others. Massage practitioners may want to use the CD background for sessions. Acupuncturists may use the recording in conjunction with other energy balancing techniques. Listeners may listen to the whole CD straight-through or listen to particular tracks to address specific energy issues.

Seasons of the Soul won the Big Island Music Award for New Age Music in 2011.

ABOUT “AUTUMN”

Autumn – Season of Decay and Turning Inward
Sept. 23 – Dec. 21 (north); Mar. 22 – June 21 (south)

Autumn is the season of harvest, and time to pull inward and gather together on all levels. As the growing season winds down, we store up food and fuel. We set aside time to plan and study for the approaching stillness of winter. Everything contracts and moves inward. It is the time of reflection or even grieving. It is the time when the lungs draw in energy and release all that is old. It is a time to organize for the next year, to smell baked goods and eat stews, squash and beans.

Other Autumn words
• Elements: Air and Metal
• Yin rising, lesser Yin
• Organs: Lungs, Large Intestine, Skin
• Body: Nose, Hair
• Emotion: Completion/ Grief, Sadness
• Taste: Sharp
• Climate: Drought
• Life Stage: Maturity
• Colors: White
• Meditation words: Pull inward, contract, harvest, organize
• Musical modes: Phrygian and Locrian

Reiki & The Harp: Connections in Vibration and Entrainment. Part 2

The Vibrations of Reiki

“Because of work done by the late C. Andrew L. Bassett and his colleagues at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, we know that the important frequencies for stimulating tissue repair are all in the biologically important Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) range,” says James Oschman, PhD, in his article, Science and the Human Energy Field.

Dr. Bassett’s research identified which ELF frequencies were most helpful in healing. “Two cycles per second (Hz) is effective for nerve regeneration, seven Hz is optimal for bone growth, ten Hz is used for ligaments, and somewhat higher frequencies work for skin and capillaries,” writes Dr. Oschman. The FDA first approved therapy using pulsing ELF in machines in 1979. Today there are many manufacturers. My friend, Dr. Carol McMakin, is a pioneer in this field, http://www.frequencyspecific.com/

Another study by Dr. John Zimmerman, University of Colorado, found that trained hands-on healing practitioners, including Reiki practitioners, could emit from their hands the very same pulsing ELF energy that is needed for the body to heal.

So far, science shows that the body responds to certain frequencies and that Reiki practitioners are able to produce the same healing frequencies from their hands.
